For Grinding Punched and Laser-Cut Tensile Specimens

Achieving accurate and reproducible test results starts with high-quality tensile specimens. Punching is the most cost-effective method for producing specimens, but it’s essential to cleanly and efficiently remove the work-hardened edge zone. If this hardened layer is not removed (as required by ISO 6892 and similar standards), Rp0.2 yield strength can be falsely increased by up to 20%.

Grinding of Tensile Specimens Cut by Laser or Water Jet

With the advancement of steel technology, high-strength sheets reaching 1,500 to 1,800 MPa are increasingly used in industries like automotive manufacturing (e.g., B-pillars, frame parts). These high-strength sheets are typically not punched but cut using laser beams. However, laser cutting melts the edges, altering material properties in the heat-affected zone (damage for 3mm sheets: approx. 0.3 - 0.5mm per side).

Additionally, tensile specimens cut with laser or water jet lack standardized flank quality, leading to up to 1/3 less elongation. Water jet cutting, performed at a right angle to the tensile direction, results in a rough, often conical edge—causing inaccuracies that even the most advanced tensile testing machines cannot correct.

Since 1967, the QualiPSM2000-15 has been the proven solution for removing edge damage (including work-hardened zones in stamped specimens) across all steel grades. It remains the only recognized and standard-compliant finishing method for boron-alloyed steels used in form hardening and press hardening (e.g., 22MnB5), where milling cutters fail immediately due to extreme toughness.

Guaranteed Centered Specimen Crack Within Lo/Le (Extensometer Cut)

Is a probe arm extensometer necessary to ensure a centered specimen crack? In most cases—especially for softer grades—this step is unnecessary, as proper grinding naturally results in a central crack. However, for harder specimens, factors like bending influence from the tensile testing machine or clamping fixtures become more critical.

To ensure a central break, the QualiPSM2000-15 can be customized for centrally tapered grinding upon request (0.03mm per side / 0.06mm total), providing precise control over specimen performance.

Option

Protective Cover with Oscillating Sample Table The protective cover is not required for CE conformity. The QualiPSM2000-15 sanding machine has been evaluated by the BGHM trade association and deemed safe to operate without it. (CE declaration of conformity is granted even without a protective cover.)
