MFFT Minimum Film Formation Temperature Tester Overview:

At a specific temperature, if the temperature isn't sufficiently high, the emulsions or polymer dispersions won't allow the polymer particles to polymerize. Consequently, all polymer particles can't amalgamate, resulting in an irregular and non-transparent white mass. On the other hand, if the temperature is high enough to facilitate particle merging, a continuous and transparent film can be formed.

White Point Temperature: This is the temperature at which a non-transparent film transitions to a transparent film.

MFFT Minimum Film-Forming Temperature:

It is the lowest temperature at which a continuous, uniform, and crack-free film forms. Generally, the White Point Temperature is several degrees lower than the MFFT.

MFFT Minimum Film-Forming Temperature Tester (Q-MFFT-1000):

MFFT(Q-MFFT-1000) main structure comprises a metal copper platen with an electronically controlled temperature gradient. Temperature sensors within the platen monitor the temperature gradient, and a graphical representation is displayed on the touch screen. The platen has separate cooling and heating sources located at its two ends, creating varying temperature gradients using metal heat conduction theory.

To use the tester, apply a wet film of emulsion or dispersions with a continuous and uniform thickness on the temperature gradient platen. Dry it using dry air, and due to the temperature variations on the platen, the sample's water evaporates and forms a film.

The film-forming position differs due to the varying temperature on the platen. The dividing point between a continuous transparent film and a non-transparent white film is identified, which is also displayed on the tester's touch screen as the MFFT. This process aligns with ASTM D 2354 and ISO 2115 standards, enabling easy and accurate testing of the minimum film temperature of emulsion polymer.
